Graham Greene wrote this novel in 1944 when he was under a 2 year contract to Metro-Godwyn-Mayer, and the manuscript lay in MGM's archives until 1983, forgotten. It was published for the first time in 1985, with an Introduction by the author. It follows the story of a man calling himself Jean-Louis Charlot who returned to the house of St. Jean de Brinac after an absence of 4 years. With the liberation of France, Paris had little to offer him.
