Austrian Composer
(1797-1828)
Schubert was originally trained as a schoolteacher at his family s request. After joining what today is known as the Vienna Boys Choir, his talents surfaced in such a way that Antonio Salleri offered to train him personally. With pressure from his family, Schubert became an educator at his father s school, until he broke away to become an independent tutor. During this time, Schubert wrote some of his best known music, including the three-act opera Alfonso und Estrella. Schubert s greatness was cut short due to a disease that took his life at 31. In spite of this, he produced more masterpieces in his lifetime than almost any composer in history.
