Native Americans burn smudge to purify places, people and things. Traditionally smudge was burned in a shell, abalone being the favorite amongst most Native Americans. It will resist high temperatures without cracking. In the purification process of smudging, the four elements are represented: the match represents fire, the herbs and ashed the earth, the smoke air, and the shell symbolises the water element.
