Maria del Mar Bonet one of Spain's most respected And emotive singers was born on the island of Majorca where she learned traditional Balearic songs as a small child. She came to Barcelona around 1967 And began to sing with "Els Setze Jutges" an important group of Catalan composer-singers And made her first stage appearance And first record with four traditional songs from Menorca. On February 6th 2004 Maria del Mar Bonet won awards for Best Traditional Folk Album And Best Album in Catalan with "Raixa" at Spain's sixth Premios de la Musica ceremony in Madrid It's a beautiful intense album recorded live at Barcelona's Placa del Rei where she has performed regularly for the past 25 years. Over a long career she has worked with many well-known performers including Alan Stivell Milton Nascimento Jackson Browne And even The Ensemble de Musique Traditionelle de Tunis ! She has been known to add material from Gershwin to The Stones to her live act. She has appeared in many countries of the world And was a big success at Glasgow's Celtic Connections a couple of years ago
