The need for training materials on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) use was identified during the worldwide outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) when observations of PPE use among healthcare workers showed potentially unsafe practices when donning, using and removing PPE. This 12-minute video, developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Infectious Diseases, provides demonstrations of donning and removing PPE and appropriate hand hygiene. The goal of this program is to increase the safety of the healthcare work environment and promote patient safety through improved use of PPE by healthcare personnel.
The program objectives are to:
- Provide information on the selection and use of appropriate PPE in the healthcare setting;
- Demonstrate how to safely put on and remove PPE; and
- Demonstrate proper hand hygiene technique.
You may wish to review the PPE slide set with accompanying trainer's guide, available at the CDC website. The slide set provides a more in-depth overview of PPE in the healthcare setting, including selection and use of PPE.
