This computer-based case study simulates an outbreak investigation in which the student is lead investigator and conducts epidemiologic detective work, leading to the source of the outbreak.
Upon completion of the case study, you will be able to: describe appropriate investigation steps for a specific outbreak scenario; apply appropriate field investigation practices; perform epidemiologic tasks such as creating line lists, developing a case definition, and calculating attack rates; and understand the applications of Epi Info and interpret results of Epi Info analyses.
Prerequisite: completion of introductory epidemiology course, e.g., Principles of Epidemiology in Public Health Practice, 3rd Edition self-study course item number SS-1000.
Computer Requirements: IBM-compatible PC running Windows 95 or Windows NT or DOS 3.31 or higher with 3 MB of free disk space, 3.5" floppy diskette drive, and color VGA monitor.
Target Audience: Public health workers who are likely to lead or participate in an outbreak investigation.
