The National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP), a joint venture between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health, and Millennium Filmworks, Inc. are pleased to announce the availability of The Debilitator and New Beginnings Combined Package.
The Debilitator is an eye-opening 30-minute health education docudrama that explores the impact of diabetes and its complications. Its goal is to raise diabetes awareness. By examining real life situations, the video takes âsnapshotsâ of people from different backgrounds and shows how individuals deal with the disease. It discusses the importance of preventative health regimens, early diabetes detection through testing, and tips for control and prevention of disabling complications.
New Beginnings was developed to expand on the themes and educational opportunities brought out in The Debilitator. New Beginnings is intended to help facilitate group discussions by providing stimulus questions, group and individual exercises, and role-playing experiences. It will be a great help in outreach efforts and will provide an opportunity to collaborate with community partners. Learning objectives, tips for leading a discussion on diabetes, and materials and handouts for discussion on the impact of diabetes are included in this discussion guide.
As a combined package, both resources help public health professionals and others facilitate diabetes education. The package focuses on an often overlooked aspect of diabetesâthe impact that emotions can have on how people give and receive information about diabetes, whether they seek help, and ultimately, what influences them to take action to control or prevent diabetes.
