This program, originally broadcast on May 20, 2004 from the Third Thursday Breakfast Broadcast (T2B2) series, provides a case management approach to childhood asthma. The program includes:
- Factors that contribute to high asthma rates;
- Asthma triggers and warning signs;
- Asthma treatments;
- Asthma's impact on the healthcare system and families; and
- A school-based asthma partnership.
This program uses the partnership between St. John's Riverside Hospital and the Yonkers schools of New York City as an example of a successful collaboration. After countless asthmatic children were rushed to its emergency room, St. John's Riverside Hospital collaborated with the Yonkers schools to form a partnership to improve asthma care within the schools. The service empowers school nurses to provide clinical treatment onsite for students experiencing asthma episodes. The result has been fewer emergency calls, reduced absenteeism and improved safety.
