Detroit Blues: Blues From The Motor City 1938-1954
Details:
Apart from John Lee Hooker who recorded his first major hits in Detroit before moving to Chicago and later California bluesmen from the Motor City have been given short shrift in music history books. Partly because until the rise of Berry Gordy's pop-soul Tamla Motown empire in the '60s there were never any powerful record companies in the city only dozens of fly-by-night backstore labels. Partly because as an industrial hub Detroit was a union stronghold an alien concept to most bluesmen. and partly because the towering stature that Hooker attained over the years unbalanced the way in which the rest of Detroit's bluesmen came to be regarded. This authoritatively compiled and annotated box set goes a long way to redress the balance. There is one disc in the set of seminal John Lee Hooker recordings that does not duplicate JSP's Hooker box JSPCD7703. Elsewhere though a rich assortment of the city's other bluesmen are given their belated dues with extensive notes by blues historian Neil Slaven explaining who they were and the circumstances behind their recordings. Featured artists include Calvin Frazier Sampson Pittman Baby Boy Warren Eddie Kirkland John Brim
