Jazz Greats
Ryan at Neo's
The story begins in New Orleans with the likes of Creole pianist Jelly Roll Morton who claimed to have invented jazz in 1902.
The twelve jazz greats featured, however, with a chapter dedicated to each, are: Buddy Bolden; Satchmo; Sidney Bechet; The Duke; Lester Young; Charlie Parker; Charles Mingus; John Coltrane; Miles Davis; Coleman, Marsalis and Jarrett.
There is an emphasis on the history of jazz as a progressive Afro-American artform running in parallel with, for example, the civil rights movement. The various genres of the form (be-bop, hot, cool etc. ) are recounted, complemented by photographs.
I wished there were more of the larger photographs, although there are some particularly special ones including an image of Josephine Baker who worked with Bechet in the twenties. Another great image from the same era shows King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band.
Jazz Greats (part of the 20th Century Composers series by Phaidon) is good value for money. It will appeal to a wide range of music fans interested in the origins, history and future of musical genres.
