A.D. Betts was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and served as a chaplain to the 30th North Carolina Infantry. He entered the service at Smithville, North Carolina, and soon joined the Confederate armies in Virginia.
This transcription of A.D. Betts diary gives a clear picture of the work of a Confederate army chaplain during the U.S. Civil War at, amongst other places, Sharpsburg and Gettysburg.
