A Harvard professor brings a group of students to Dorset to research the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles. She also wishes to find evidence of her ancestors. She finds a girls body in a churchyard. Unknown to her a professor from Yale, who knew her when they were both undergraduates, is also in Dorset with a group studying Thomas Hardy. He had danced with the murdered girl the night that she is killed. They meet in Bournemouth police station where they have both been taken for questioning.
The investigation leads to a florist who has links with the London underworld. Southern Enquiries are called in to investigate a credit card fraud while Captain Jackie Parker and her sergeants investigate the origin of a curious gun.
