Synopsis:
This film, one of Ozu's most popular, resembles an earlier masterpiece, I Was Born But ¡K (1932) Two little boys live with their parents in a close-quartered suburban neighbourhood. There is a misunderstanding among the next-door neighbour ladies. Meanwhile, after an argument with their parents - they want a TV set, and the father refuse to buy one - the boys are told to shut up. Taking their parents at their word they shut up completely, won't talk to anyone, not even the neighbours who, finding the customary morning greeting ("Ohayo!") unanswered, at once assume that the mother is angry with them and the neighbourhood quarrel begins. Ozu constructs a gentle, witty comedy of manners out of everyday life to underlie a thought-provoking theme : of what exactly constitutes the basis of true communication in society
