This is a companion piece to the other black dragon moriage porcelain listed in the shop. Moriage is a detailed slip application that is applied to the surface in layers for a dimensional effect. The more layers, the more detail. Each scale has been applied individually. Slip is clay that is combined with water to a very creamy fluid consistency. Other techniques used are: beading, piercing, hair line brush painting and gilding.
Nippon Characteristics:
Background looks sponged, marbled or waterspotted (rare and valuable). The pieces are edged in brown with tiny white dots. Enamel decorations on handles can be quite elaborate. The dragon can have its tail over its head (Morimura Bros.). The shape of the dragon is not standardized. The head is often very different. Look for the head facing up, two wings or parted wings, nothing in the claws and blue jewel eyes. Pieces will be marked Nippon or be unmarked. The level of detail is high.
