Onyx information:
Onyx is a variety of chalcedony quartz (microcrystaline quartz) with a fine texture and black color that is found world wide. Onyx comes in brown, white, grey, and black. with a hardness of 7 out of 10 on the mohs scale. The higher the number the harder the stone. It may chip or scratch. Onyx is very similar to agate. Onyx has straight bands of brown, white or black; agate has curved lines of many colors. Since ancient times, Onyx has been dyed to improve its color. Often treated agate is sold as Black Onyx.
The name 'onyx' comes from the Greek word "onux", which means fingernail. But in Greek times, almost all colors of chalcedony from fingernail white to dark brown and black were called onyx. Later, the Romans narrowed the term to refer to black and dark brown colors. It has a fine texture that makes it ideal for carving and is often used to make cameos.
