Filigree or "skan" is one of the most ancient kinds of artistic metalwork in Russia. The name "filigree" originates from two Latin words: filum - thread è granum - grain. The Russian name "skan" comes from the ancient Slav word meaning "twile,twist" which point to the peculiarity of the art: twisted fine wire and minute metal grains are used in it. The technique of filigree is the following: first, a pattern is made by gluing fine copper wire to a paper base according to the contour lines drawn on it; then in is powdered with silver braze and the components of the pattern are soldered. Volumetric forms are made in the same way, but the paper with the drawn pattern is glued to a metal frame. The article is coated with silver in a plating bath.
