Metal halide lamps for freshwater aquariums
Many people only associate metal halide lamps as a product for use with marine aquariums, but that is not necessarily the case.
Plants in a freshwater aquarium need a light that contains the wavelengths used for photosynthesis, and that can provide it at sufficient strength to the tissue of the plant.
In many cases suitable light can be provided by using the appropriate fluorescent tubes, but in the cases of certain specialist species with a high light demand, or in the case of a deep water aquarium, then it can be difficult to satisfy the light requirements of the tanks flora simply by using fluorescents.
In these cases, the use of a suitable metal halide lamp can be the required tool.
The Arcadia 5,200Kelvin lamp, will promote photosynthesis of aquatic plants, whilst at the same time creating the visual effect that we would expect to see in a clear, shallow freshwater stream.
How do I maximise the benefits of the lamps themselves?
The Arcadia Series 3 range of pendants is an ideal way of housing, and optimising metal halide lamps.
They contain a specifically designed reflector, which focuses the lamps output into the aquarium, and by using the adjustable deflectors, the light spread can be altered to cover the entire aquarium without causing glare to any onlookers.
With the exception of the mini version, all models contain supplementary lighting from fluorescent tubes, and built in timers, so that a fixed daily photoperiod can be set.
