Collieston, Aberdeenshire
Collieston is the first safe haven for small boats in over 15 miles of sandy, dune-backed beaches stretching northwards from Aberdeen. It lies three miles north of the mouth of the River Ythan where the sandy shoreline changes abruptly to a rocky, predominantly cliffed coastline which is also unsuitable for harbours. A thriving fishing settlement until the advent of drift-net fishing which, by the mid-19th century, was best carrried out by boats too big to gain entry to its harbour. It also enjoyed notoriety as a suitably remote harbour for smuggling, but now functions mainly as a tourist and dormitory settlement. The heather-covered dunes of the Sands of Forvie Nature Reserve stretch inland across the centre of the photograph between the coastline and the River Ythan, which runs right to left beyond. The Sand Loch lies just behind the village on the edge of the Sands of Forvie
