Valley of the Drawn Sword - The Early History of Burnley, Pendle
Valley of the Drawn Sword - The Early History of Burnley, Pendle and West Craven
by John A Clayton
Published by Barrowford in association with Exposure Publishing, October 2006, ISBN 0955382106
This well-illustrated book covers the early foundation of East Lancashire and the area of Pennine West Yorkshire from pre-history to the Norman Invasion of 1066. The author, John A Clayton, has written a previous sell-out book on the subject of genealogy, written numerous articles covering the local history of his region and has recently worked with the BBC in relation to the restoration of a Lancashire textile mill. John has long been fascinated by both the recorded history and the mysterious legacies within the landscape left to us by our early ancestors. Drawing on thirty-five years of experience gained from exploring the backwaters of his area he offers a fresh and lively view of his subject.
The mysteries of our ancient past remain in the alignment of features within the landscape stretching from the moors of Burnley into the Yorkshire borderlands. Other facets of the area's history are explored including local kingdoms and boundaries, hill forts and other early defences, ancient trackways, settlements and placenames. The Anglo-Saxon period led to the formation of our modern society and is covered from the first settlers to the many conflicts that were to take place between the Saxon and Viking cultures. Perhaps the largest of all these was the tenth century Great Battle of Brunanburh for which there are strong arguments in favour of the site having taken place on the outskirts of Burnley and Colne this is covered in detail. Within the 204 pages of its fourteen chapters the Valley of the Drawn Sword provides a wealth of subject material not before covered, this is supported by the inclusion of over eighty plates and illustrations.
