Llanwrytd Wells Cycling Guide
by Tim Woodcock
Publishers description
Updated and revised in 2003 the Llanwrtyd Wells Cycle Guide has rides to please everyone. Cyclists can select from winding lane and track rides along the enchanting Irfon valley - well-suited to family excursions - to renowned road routes such as the serious, switch-back ascent of the Devil's Staircase and mountain bike trails that featured in the gruelling Man v Horse v Bike race of international repute. And there's no better way to explore mid-Wales than by bike.
There are large tracts of commercial forest covering areas of the surrounding hills. So where you'd reasonably expect to find waterlogged, difficult bridleways typical of the Cambrian Mountains here there's a wealth of well-graded, all-weather tracks to explore. Within the forests are ancient by-ways and bridleways which often make for more challenging rides, especially where contour lines jostle for space on the map. Beyond the margins of the forest stretches open fell. Dark peat with underlying shales and capped with tussocky, millennia grass they are criss-crossed with old drove roads and bridleways. These more remote, technical routes are for the experienced rider only but open up many exciting possibilities for epic, all-day excursions.
Most cyclists who come to explore the Llanwrtyd Wells area are delighted by the peace and serenity found on the minor roads. Traffic-free tours of any length and incorporating big, little or virtually no climbing at all are easily planned together with convenient pub and picnic stops. Where a 'yellow', so-called minor road in more populous areas could mean a busy rat-run spiced up with unsettling road-rage encounters here in the heart of Wales it's almost always narrow, winding, often wild and with not much more than a pot-hole or two to trouble the freewheeling spirit.
All routes described and mapped on individual cards. Off-road routes are all signposted.
