Woodsman Giles Winterborne (Rufus Sewell) is destined to marry his sweetheart, Grace Melbury (Emily Woof), a timber merchant's daughter. But when Grace graduates from an elite boarding school, her social climbing instincts get the best of her, and she forsakes Giles for an unhappy marriage with a handsome doctor (Cal Macaninch). Through it all, Giles pines for his lost love in this lavish romance based on the Thomas Hardy classic.
