George Schneider (James Caan) is a gentle, shy and witty New Yorker, recently widowed. By a series of fluke phone calls he meets Jennie MacLaine (Marsha Mason), a young actress on the rebound from a broken marriage. Jennie soon realises shes fallen in love again and George is equally smitten. So they marry, having known each other for exactly ten days.
