Wanderers United
are the biggest, most successful Club in the English Premiership. Treble winners in 1999, they are bought by a sex-mad South African media multi-billionaire who insists that the manager and assistant manager build a world-beating team. Then he plans to sack them; except they find out. So they put together a team of international dead-beats: a porn star, an amateur witch doctor, a drunk, a thug, players carrying injuries, a pot-smoker, two strikers and two midfielders who wont speak to one another, a player afraid of flying
But then no manager in the world will touch such a team with a bargepole, so the scheming managers cant be sacked and are left trying to win everything with their no-hope squad. Add a club secretary with hypochondria, a Board member plagued by irritable bowel syndrome, a very personal assistant, a friendly in Venice, a womens team, 35,000 size 4 footballs sent to Gambia, an off-course Concorde, the Government wanting United to play in FIFAs World Club Championship meaning they might not be able to defend the FA Cup they won the season before, a Cornish village team and a badly- built brand new stand and you have a footballing farce which builds up to an unexpected finale.
The author is a semi-retired teacher and freelance sports reporter originally from London but who emigrated to Cornwall in 1972.
