Letters to Brad
by Josie Jeffrey
Published by Exposure Publishing, May 2006, ISBN 1846852005
LETTERS TO BRAD follows the lives and events which involve the family and neighbours of Mrs. B. Waterstone as she tells it via her regular letters to her soldier son. Old fashioned and unsophisticated and, it must be said, not the brightest button, Being called thick never did me any harm, she manages to tell her stories with unintended humour. The letters follow the lives of Brad himself, Dad, Aunt Sadie who is an outrageous born again old hippy, various neighbours especially nosy Mrs. Newton, fountain of all the most unlikely gossip. There is Dennis next door whose behavioural problems are not likely to improve with age. The Jacksons at number 20 including Annette, mother of an unmarried baby and Rory/Aurora her brother/sister who lands a plum job with the army provide Mum with plenty to write about as does the staff and doings at the Dewdrop Inn.
Mum paints a sublime and hilarious picture enhanced by the fact that most of goes completely over her head.
