A 1950s trained nurse and midwife who is still working in the health service at the age of 73 contrasts the N.H.S. of fifty years ago with that of today.
She highlights how good nursing practices and the standard of all round care has changed, not for the better but for the worse. Since the late 1970s the complexion of medicine and nursing care started to slide on a slippery slope downwards and has kept on sliding. For example: cleanliness across the board from the consultant right down to the ward cleaners where hand washing seems to no longer be practised. And the care seems to have disappeared from healthcare as treating the pressure areas of the bed patients does not appear to be on the agenda for care any more.
