Info: Volume 15 of the astonishing and universally praised Ethiopiques series presents us with a rare example of fusion with contemporary external influences and improvisation. Centuries of isolation stubborn independence and until 1991 the restrictive rule of the Derg had to a large extent prevented excessive erosion of musical styles and traditions in Ethiopia. Over the past 10 years that has now changed. Improvisation plays an important part in their music but mainly vocal and verbal. Jump to Addis is the result of an encounter between four musicians (German Dutch & French) students of pianist Misha Mengelberg at the Amsterdam Conservatory who fell in love with Ethiopian music when they met Circus Ethiopia on tour in Europe.
