NEIL LEYTON- '.....again'
Ltd. Edition CDR "Holiday Special", FW Artist Collective release no. 4 (FWMS004). Limited to 100 numbered copies.
To help combat a heavy bout of SPTDD (Severe Post Tour Depression Disorder) Leyton grabbed his Gibson Jumbo Acoustic and his ES-135 and proceeded to record a series of acoustic-based songs, 11 in total, some new originals, and some covers, including Aceface's "Again", The Sinisters' "Tri-State Killing Spree", and Nikki Sudden's "When Angels Die", which he covered live several times during the Betrayal of the Self tour. Leyton's originals include: "reality", "blythe", "where i want to be" and "humanist cafe".
"It is my x-mas album. I hope you get down with it, and it gets you down too. Love & wine!" - NL
THE SINISTERS - "Tri-State Killing Spree" from Jumbo means Jumbo (FWM022)
The Canadian kings of glam punk, often described as the heirs to the Stooges' throne, have blazed a trail of mayhem and self destruction across north america for 13 years. Nowhere was this black-hearted determination more apparent than in their 2001 release "Jumbo means Jumbo".
PASSION'D FLOWER - "Midnight Train" from Flowers in the Rain (FWMS-CDR)
Neil Leyton's first band, while still in high school, followed in the grand tradition of the Velvet Underground and the Doors, influenced by several crooners from Elvis Presley to Scott Walker. Skutch (songs, vocals, guitars) and bassist Neil Leyton lead the band into Studio 92 in Toronto's old Donlands movie theatre for the recording of their 1992 debut album, Flowers in the Rain. Re-issued as a one-at-a-time Fading Ways CDR item from the new digital master.
ACEFACE - "Again" from Threat Level: redwhiteblue (FWR039)
"They've got the suits and the skinny ties, but rather than simply being a high-fashion mod revival, Toronto's Aceface have something to say to back up their '60s U.K. attire. Principal songwriter and musical prodigy Carl Nanders uses the band's debut to create a lefty's freak-out jam session, rallying against war, fear and manufactured consent. Chomsky and Fisk get props in the liner notes and Nanders and his organ-boogie rock symphony don't shy away from some thick and catchy music to complement the intelligent lyrical material. Book-smart rockers can get a bit pretentious at times; luckily, this tambourine-jiggling throwback is a readathon with a very welcome ass-shaking twistathon." - Chart Magazine review.
RED ORKESTRA - "Sweet Hereafter" from After the Wars (FWR036)
The debut album from Johnny Charmer's Red Orkestra features Loaf Pariah and George Bettencourt on guitar, Devin Stoneham on drums and Neil Leyton on bass. Personal, political, melodic, powerful and very emotional debut effort. A must for fans of Morrissey, the Smiths, with a hint of BIlly Bragg mixed with melodic brit-pop.
NANCY, DESPOT! - "Dorothy" off of Left of Memphis (NOISECD001)
Toronto's Nancy, Despot! were part of the same '95-'96 scene that spawned the Sinisters and Neil Leyton's Conscience Pilate. In fact, Nancy and the 'Pilate often gigged together as part of the Orange Alert collective until the untimely death of the Despots' singer, Brian Gunstone. Nancy, Despot!'s bassist can presently be found fronting the Shanks, who are also part of the FW Artist Collective. Nancy, Despot!'s recorded musical legacy is their astonishing debut, "Left of Memphis".
