Dozens of All-Americans. Countless statistical milestones. But the numbers alone don't do justice to the impact that Iowa football has had and continues to have on its legion of fans. What takes place within the storied confines of Nile Kinnick Stadium is more than simply a game; it's a way of life. During the epic reign of Hayden Fry, an era that saw Hawkeye football become a dominant power on the national landscape, Iowa became synonymous with college football excellence—and that excellence shows no signs of diminishing under Kirk Ferentz. From a stunning run to the Big Ten title in 1981, to a classic win over Michigan in 1985's No. 1-vs.-No. 2 showdown, to the sterling 10-win seasons enjoyed under Ferentz, the Hawkeyes have continued to build on the legacy established by legends such as Kinnick, Alex Karras, Calvin Jones and Chuck Long, all while giving their fans countless cherished memories. Coach Fry put it this way on the occasion of the Hawkeyes' win over Minnesota that clinched the 1985 Big Ten title: "I'll remember this group for all the great things they've accomplished. These seniors have brought great recognition and exposure to the University of Iowa and the entire state. As of right now, I'd have to say this is my No. 1 victory, the finest ever. It's a great day for the state of Iowa." Game Day Iowa Football is a celebration of that pride that all Hawkeye players and fans share, and of the decades of gridiron excellence that have inspired it.
