Second volume in the Classics R&B series gathering together the remainder of Ray Charles' Down Beat & Swing Time recordings And ending with his first Atlantic session. He is still partly under the influence of Charles Brown And Nat King Cole but he's beginning to experiment with larger horn-led bands And developing a more gospel-fuelled soulful style. During this period he had Billboard R&B chart hits with "Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand" And "Kissa Me Baby". Also on this release is his recording of an early Lieber & Stoller number "The Snow Is Falling". The Atlantic session produced great tracks like "The Midnight Hour" And "The Sun's Gonna Shine". Ray Charles was the musician most responsible for developing soul music devising a new form of black pop by merging '50s R&B with gospel-powered vocals adding plenty of flavour from contemporary jazz blues And (in the '60s) country.
