The first true sequel to the original PlayStation 2 game has been announced for the next generation consoles, but what new features will it bring? With no trailers or even hints as to its content, for the moment Rockstar are currently saying nothing. However, despite almost no information being released about the actual game, we do know the exact release date: 19th October, 2007 - simultaneously on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
The three PS2 games all used the same basic graphics engine and were each based on the three cities in the original PS one Grand Theft Auto game. That means that this new game is in completely uncharted territory, with only the London setting of the GTA1 mission disk and the pseudo-futuristic backdrop of GTA2 offering any kind of a clue as to what might be coming next. Other speculation has included a game set in Bogota and Tokyo, after Rockstar trademarked the names (although that could have been for many different reasons). A more likely rumour is that it will be set in the never seen Carcer City, which has often been mentioned in the previous games. The fact that all of the voice over actors so far revealed are American certainly suggests the game will be based in the U.S.
Another possibility is that the game will be a massively multiplayer online game, with Rockstar's website advertising for several programmers with that type of experience. In terms of graphics technology the game will use an enhanced version of the graphics engine used for Rockstar Presents Table Tennis, although as mentioned no screenshots have been revealed yet. Whatever the final game turns out to be though Rockstar can guarantee that millions of fans are dying to find out the truth.
