VINTAGE AND VINEYARD
The 2002 Martinborough vintage was warmer than usual with above average rainfall.
The generous season, combined with Alana Estate's free draining alluvial terraces provided perfect growing conditions for vine and leaf development.
Irrigation was kept to a minimum and thoughtful canopy management involving leaf plucking and shoot thinning allowed the vines to bear and ripen fruit to an optimal level.
Alana Estate Chardonnay comes from a selection of clones on different rootstock throughout the vineyard.
Careful vine handling shapes the fruit, enhancing full, complex flavours.
Selective hand harvesting ensures the highest quality fruit for this superb wine.
WINEMAKING
Whole bunch pressing and cold settling produced clean juice for fermented in new French oak barriques, with the balance transferred to one and two year old barrels.
Indigenous yeast from the vineyard and cellar ferment the juice and secondary (malolactic) fermentation encouraged.
Regular battonage and extended lees contact sees the wine mature and develop in barrel for approximately 9 months.
Racking, fining and filtration delivers a bright clean wine for bottling.
