Charles Rankin (Orson Welles) is a college professor living in Connecticut with Mary (loretta Young) when one day a very nervous German man called Konrad Meineke (Konstantin Shayne) arrives in town. The newcomer is taken for a walk in the forest by the professor where the real indentity of Rankin becomes known; he is actually a notorious Nazi war criminal called Franz Kindler who has escaped justice. Meinke, conscience stricken by his own genocide wartime activites, has come to beg his former superior Kindler to surrender; for which he is brutally murdered. Kindler beleiving that his secret is safe doesn't bargain for the arrival of war crimes commissioner Wilson (Edward G. Robinson)., posing as a mild mannered antiques dealer. Wilson is determined to see the wartime criminal brought to justice. Welles directed this taut thriller which was nominated for an Oscar for best original story.
