Silver Eight Reale Coin Pendant dated 1733 in 18K Gold and Diamond Bezel
This fabulous 8 reale was minted in Mexico in 1733, and was possibly found on the 1733 Fleet which sank in the Florida Keys. This coin is a rare "Klippe" coin. This means that the coin was struck on an irregular planchet using a machine press with a special die design unique to klippe coins. This method was only used in 1733, 1734, and a few 1735 coins exist. The oobverse is of "Royal" quality in that the design is quite sharp and detailed. The shield of Phillip V is at the center of the obverse with mint and assayer's marks to the left and the denomination to the right. The date is complete in the upper left quadrant. The reverse has the beautiful stylized Florenzada Cross unique to Mexico. Many of these coins were pierced. Passengers would often do this in an attempt to hide the coins by placing them on strings and wearing them inside their clothes. This one is no exception. We have placed a .20 ct. diamond inside the piercing to add a little extra luster to this wonderful piece. It is mounted in nearly an ounce of 18 kt. yellow gold with a large barrel hoop at the top. A unique and wonderful gift that is both historical and beautiful.
