The Gathering have definitely carved a niche for themselves in the progressive doom-rock market. 'If_Then_Else' seems a little less diverse than the bands previous album 'How To Measure A Planet', but more cohesive, and the band is playing more as a tight unit. This album is more similar to their 1997's 'Nighttime Birds' in style and structure, although that is not to say that they haven't evolved at all since then. The playing on 'If_Then_Else' is solid and the production is excellent. Thick rhythm guitars form the backbone of the heavier tracks, while clean guitars and keyboards are dominant in the more laid back numbers. Most of the time, the keyboards are used to a more subtle effect - mainly in the quieter moments - rather than dominating the songs constantly. All the tracks feature guitar and vocal melodies weaving in and out of the mix in quite an evocative way, reminiscent of mid 70's Pink Floyd. Anneke's vocals are strong and distinctive as usual, and of course hold the spotlight for most of the album.
