12 pc. Nativity Scene - Arca de Sirena
13 pc. Nativity Scene - Arca de Sirena (Mermaid Arc), hand carved and painted in native Copal wood by Elpidio Fabian Ojeda of San Matín Tilcajete, Ocotlan, Oaxaca, Mexico.
This is an interesting interpretation of the Nativity. The Zapotecs always picture Noah's arc as being carried by a bird. I have been unable to determine why this is so. The artists tell me that they have always done so. You can find many alebrijes and wood carvings of the arc by various Zapotec artists and the arc is always shown being carried or guided by a bird.
Elpidio's creativity takes this Zapotec tradition a step further when he sculpts the arc in the form of a sirena, or mermaid.
The Nativity Scene is 21 inches in height and roughly 24 inches in length.
