Design and Build a full-size 24'x24' timber frame in just 5 days. Draft the frame to 1/4" scale, cut the timbers to precise dimensions, layout 10 different timber joints and learn specialized marking techniques to ensure crisp, tight joinery. Enjoy a thorough introduction to essential tools of timber framing, both old and new. Learn the importance of temperature controlled sharpening, and sharpen your tools to a razor sharp edge! Develop and practice effective roughing out techniques, and weigh the cost/benefits of relevant power tools. Finesse precisely joined timbers with your very own traditional timber framing slick and learn specialized techniques for drawing timbers together tightly. Bring your calculator because we also do the serious engineering calculations (bending moments, shear and deflection) so you can design your own unique timber frame. Wrap up with a tour of area timber frames, the final interlocking assembly, and an old-fashioned timber frame raising.
Classroom sessions are held in our timber framed retail facility; work is conducted in our open span 8,000 s.f. workshop, protected from inclement weather. Shelter Institute's 50-acre wooded campus is open to you for walks along a tidal estuary across from a nature preserve.
Shelter Institute Graduates continue to enjoy special benefits long after class ends, and our community of graduates often help eachother on building projects. Students hale from all walks of life and share unique life experiences during their stay. For the Hennin Family and Shelter Institute's professional timber framing crew, the class is also a social event. While here, you are invited to enjoy our company in the evenings as well. Typically on Tuesday night we gather at a local restaurant, and on Thursday we enjoy a Pot Luck Supper at a Hennin family home. This is an opportunity to share your favorite food with your fellow classmates.
The frames built by our classes are so well made, complete with notched braces, dovetailed tenons, and wedged mortice and tenon joints, that we actually sell them after the class. Ok, we do give a small discount - but, still, no mistakes allowed! Often, it is a graduate of the class who buys the frame.
Non-Refundable Registration:$300 (To be deducted from tuition - balance due the first day of class. This Registration fee can be applied to future classes, if you must cancel for any reason.) Once you register, we send you our housing list and tool list so you can make appropriate arrangements for your stay.
