Heaven's Angels Christmas Card of a digital block print created by Roy Hughes, who spent a month-long residency in Glacier Park during July and August 2005, based out of a log cabin provided by the National Park Service on the shore of Lake McDonald. Since he bases his artwork on reference photos, Hughes hiked 10 different trails in the park in the first half of his residency taking nearly 800 pictures. Hughes says that he doesnt know whether he is a hiker who paints or a painter who hikes. Nevertheless he covered 47 miles and gained over 12,000 feet in elevation during his 10 hikes.
From his reference photographs, Hughes produces a type of art which he calls digital block prints. These works of art are created on a computer using a graphics program. The process of creating a digital block print can be imagined as painting each color seen in an image on a transparent piece of glass, then stacking each color layer on top of the preceding layer until all of the layers are completed. The result is a completed piece of art, which is then flattened in the computer and printed out using a high-quality inkjet printer. The completed artwork, when printed, resembles the travel posters created for Glacier National Park by artists for the Great Northern Railway in the 1920s and 30s.
