Muhammad Ibn Sa'd
Translation of vol. V of Ibn Sa’d’s Kitab at-Tabaqat al-Kabir
-translated by Aisha Abdarrahman at-Tarjumana Bewly
338 pages Paperback A5 ISBN 1 897940 62 9 £7.50

This book is particularly interesting because its pages demonstrate the attitude and action of the Companions and the Tabi'un when confronted by that most dangerous of trials - fitna, or civil war. This is extremely important in the modern age, in which fitna is commonplace, for we can learn a great deal from how the early Muslims dealt with it. Published by Ta Ha London Translation of Volume 5 of the Kitab at-Tabaqat al-Kabir of Ibn Sa’d  It concentrates on the Tabiu’un, the generation after the companions, who lived in Madina itself, may Allah be pleased with all of them and have mercy on them. The study of Madina in the early period assumes great importance since it is well known that the first three generations after the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, are considered to be the best generations, and the school of the people of the Madina was known to be the soundest of schools. This was because the people of Madina confined themselves to following in the footsteps of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, more then the people of any other region did.
