During late summer, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, there is a hiatus, a period in which time seems to stop and the glory of summer hangs suspended. We are momentarily free of the cycle of birth, growth, decay and death. (Between Heaven and Earth Benfield/Korngold). At this time of year, the power of Earth becomes dominant. The organs which correspond with Earth are the spleen and stomach. According to TCM the spleen is the source of life for all other organs. It is called the Official in Charge of Distribution a massive distribution centre from where everything is carried out to the rest of the body/mind. It supplies the body/mind/spirit with sufficient energy, blood and nutrients.
The stomach is called the Official of the Public Granaries and the Official of Rotting and Ripening, i.e. the one who receives nourishment, integrates it, brings it to fruition and passes on the food energy to be distributed by the spleen.
We can see from reading these descriptions how key these organs are to keeping our energy systems healthy. From my own experience and learning of TCM, many Chinese doctors treat the spleen and stomach first and foremost no matter what the presenting symptoms are for if we are not receiving nourishment and sufficient energy, then it is difficult for us to heal.
Interestingly, in Feng Shui Earth is always the centre of the house (or room).
Earth in Balance The archetype of balanced Earth energies is The Mother/The Peacemaker/ the one who makes us feel safe and that we have a place to come home to. We know who we are and where we belong and are comfortable with sitting awhile and allowing our body and spirits to refresh and renew.
The Mother is a natural mediator; she is tolerant, compassionate, well grounded and able to move out of her own space to feel others pain but equally able to move back to her own self. In other words, she has a real sense of self and has secure boundaries.
How is your Earth? A tree is as sturdy as the soil in which it is rooted. · If the soil is too porous, there is erosion. We become scattered and have a lack of structure in our lives. · If the soil is too dense we can get stuck; we are unable to move and feel we have a lack of options.
The middle way is that Earth sustains our momentum and keeps us aligned in the direction of our desired goal. It gives us our capacity for changing direction without losing balance. Earth is our centre of gravity, the point of reference around which all other aspects of character and structure orient themselves.

Deficient Earth Energy can lead us to feeling hungry for attention, being ingratiating and/or clingy. A lack of constant support and nourishment (which often stems from our time in the womb or early childhood) can lead to covering up real needs with outward display or detachment and indifference. We feel inadequate and become dependent on others for emotional and physical needs.
