This historically important rare silver medal was by R. Arondeaux a dutch engraver (MI i 615/27). It was struck to commemorate the execution of the Dukes of Monmouth and Argyle after their rebelion against James II in 1685. The Duke of Monmouth was the illegitimate son of Charles II. He planned a failed attempt to take the throne of England and was captured after the battle of Sedgemoor. The duke claimed the merit of attempting to be the defender of the faith and liberty of England against the encroachment of the Catholic James. The diameter is 61mm and the condition nearly EF. This medal has been SOLD.
