1661 - The Official Coronation Medal of Charles II SOLD
This is the official silver coronation medal of Charles II by Thomas Simon (MI i 472/76). The reverse shows Charles II in royal robes, holding the sceptre, seated on a throne; Peace hovers above places the crown on his head. The diameter is 29mm and the condition is almost EF. The medal is very rare in this condition. The entry in the Medallic Illustrations reads:- "This is the coronation medal struck for distribution among the spectators of that splendid ceremony. It was engraved by Thomas Simon, and has never been surpassed for minuteness and delicacy of work. Most specimens show some wear in the more delicate and prominent parts of the work".
