Betty Grable goes West with a song and a smile in this lively musical set on the American frontier. Preston Sturges directed THE BEAUTIFUL BLONDE FROM BASHFUL BEND, a wild Western farce with plenty of action. Grable plays a hot-tempered saloon entertainer named Freddie, who?s as quick to pick up a pistol, as she is to kick up her heels. Cesar Romero co-stars as her boyfriend, Blackie, a handsome gambler with a wandering eye. After he casts one too many amorous glances in the wrong direction, Freddie tries to gun Blackie down but hits a judge instead. So Freddie flees to another town, where she?s mistaken for a teacher and decides to take the job. The kids are a little unruly but quiet down fast when Freddie starts shooting inkwells off of their heads! When not in front of the class, she?s romanced by the prim and proper Charles Hingleman (Rudy Vallee). He?s a little more genteel than the men she?s used to, but his gold mine more than makes up for that! Things jus might work out for Freddie after all, but Blackie shows up with threats to expose her, and she winds up in the middle of a blazing feud. While the smoke clears, the slapstick flies faster than the bullets and music fills the air with song like ?Every Time I Meet You?, ?In the Gloamin?. And the film?s breezy little title tune. When THE BEAUTIFUL BLONDE FROM BASHFUL BEND was made (in the late 40?s), color was an expensive process, and studio heads wanted Preston Sturges to do the movie in black and white. Sturges wrote to Darryl f. Zanuck, ?Miss Grable is the natural child of color. Presenting her without it is like presenting an opera without music. ?The Beautiful blonde from Bashful Bend? is?fashioned for the sole purpose of presenting the luscious Betty Grable to her customers in the full color to which they are accustomed.? Sturges ultimately got his way, and the film was shot in Technicolor.
