Course Excerpt Lesson 1: Overview of GED and Pre-test
Welcome to the GED preparation class. My name is Aimee Evans. I am a teacher and a GED graduate. I completed my GED in 1994, went on to attend Florida Community College and from there, went on to a four-year university. I like to tell people my story because so many times having a GED gives people the idea that a GED will not get you into college. I am living proof that you can be a GED holder and a college graduate. So please allow me to help you on your journey of obtaining your GED, which will open up so many opportunities for you.
Facts About The GED:
1. More that 15 million people have received their GED. Of these, 70% have completed at least the 10th grade prior to taking the GED.
2. The GED is available in English, Spanish, French, large print, audiocassette, and online for people who live outside that US.
3. The GED is broken down into five test batteries: Language Arts Writing, Language Arts Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.
4. Some states require GED test takers to take a pre-GED mathematics test before registering for the actual test to access if an examinee is ready for the exam.
5. Tests are commonly divided over a two day period which may mean two weekends, or two days during the week. Alternatively, some colleges offer evening exams as well.
6. Examinees must score in the 40% percentile on all subtests; however, some states may require higher scores. The top score is 800 on each battery, however examinees that obtain a 450 or better on each battery are most likely to pass.
7. Examinees are only allowed to bring pens, pencils, and erasers with them on test days. The institution will provide calculators.
8. Many of the questions involve interpreting passages in order to correctly obtain an answer for a question.
9. If an examinee does not pass a particular test battery, only that battery has to be taken again, not the entire GED.
10. The test will be scored electronically, except for the essay portion which will be scored manually by two different scorers.
