Who are the Grillbillies?
Way back in 1993, I was at the Wind Gap Bluegrass Festival in Wind Gap, Pa. I was camping with a bunch of friends that I had known from many years of going to bluegrass festivals. Now it seems that some of my friends had been sneaking gourmet meals while the rest of us poor souls were surviving on hot dogs and concession food. When the word got out about the gourmet meals everyone wanted in! People started showing up at dinner time with all kinds of food and the whole thing was soon out of control. We could not believe how much food people were bringing to our camp. Now this was happening at every festival we went to (and we went to a festival almost every weekend). someone thought that we should choose a name for our quickly growing group. Well, we're a bunch of hillbillies, and we like to cook, so how about "Grillbillies?" The rest is history.
Of course good musicians could always find a free meal, and all the best musicians were ending up in our camp and playing until the wee small hours of the morning. The parties got bigger and the music got better and better!
Then there are the kids! We thought it was cute when the little kids started to learn to play bluegrass instruments. After a couple of years they started to sound pretty good, and now after a couple more years there are several of them that have become really good musicians!
In five years of camping, feasting, and pickin' with the GRILLBILLIES, I have some wonderful memories! Every bluegrass festival we attend becomes a wonderful party of great music and great food!
This album, along with Volume II, are our re-creation of some of those wonderful musical memories. With an all-star cast, we have gathered the best combinations of our most talented Grillbillie friends in a way that really shows them off.
