A Revised Edition
John L. Nickalls, ed George Fox (1624 – 1691), through his leadership and writings, is regarded as the seminal figure of the Religious Society of Friends. The son of a Leicestershire weaver, he left home at the age of nineteen in search of men and women who were on a like spiritual pilgrimage. From these encounters Quakerism sprang. Fox was throughout his life a tireless traveler and preacher – his journeys include Ireland, the continent of Europe, and America. He suffered much persecution and many imprisonments. His Journal, in effect a spiritual autobiography, was first published in 1694 and is a recognized spiritual classic. It has been reprinted many times. This edition, first published in 1952, is based on the manuscript sources, though spelling and punctuation have been modernized. It thus recaptures the immediacy and vigor-of-phrase of Fox himself.
